What are combination brows?

One of our favourite new services for professional brows is called combination or combo brows. So what is this trending treatment all about?

As the name might suggest, combination brows are a hybrid procedure, combining two other popular techniques – microblading and powder shading (also sometimes called powder brows).

With a trained eye, your brow artist will use the semi-permanent, cosmetic tattooing technique of microblading to create precise, hair-like strokes at the start of your brows. Then powder shading is used to add additional shape, fullness, and density.

The effect is fluffy, full, supermodel style brows and clients are loving the way this style looks incredibly natural, while also adding hyper realistic definition and volume to your existing brows.

Combination brows are a great choice for anyone with sparse, patchy or thin brows, who is looking for a bit more boldness and body. Combo brows provide the look of made up or filled in brows, so they’re also a fantastic option for anyone wanting their brows to look sharp on the daily without the use of makeup.

Oilier skin types may see better results with a combination brow service, as opposed to only microblading, as microblading can sometimes produce mixed results on oily skin. The shading component of combination brows helps to eliminate any issues with blurring. The treatment can also be used to correct or update brows that have previously been microbladed.

As with any cosmetic tattooing procedure, there may be some mild discomfort during the microblading process. However, your professional brow artist will use a numbing cream to prevent any discomfort. Most clients say they feel a slight scratching sensation during the procedure, but it is typically minimal and does not last.

For optimal results, combination brows require two initial treatments about 4-6 weeks apart. This ensures that pigment is properly distributed and evenly saturated. After this two-part process, you can expect results to last for about a year to 18 months, or in some cases even longer.

Over time the pigment will gradually fade in intensity, but will last longer with proper skin care and use of SPF. If you wish to maintain the look of your combination brow treatment you can return for an annual touch up as needed.

Perhaps the most important thing to note when choosing combination brows is that proper after care is essential. Immediately following treatment, you will want to avoid use of certain cosmetics such as makeup or retinol products directly over the tattoo, and apply moisturising ointment to prevent excess redness or flaking. The healing process for combo brows can take a couple weeks, so following the instructions of your brow artist is a must during this period.
