3D areola and nipple tattoos are a type of cosmetic tattoo that can be used to improve the appearance of the breasts after surgery, or to create a more symmetrical appearance.

The downtime and home care for 3D areola and nipple tattooing is similar to other types of tattoos. Your EI tattooist will apply a tegaderm bandage immediately after the treatment.

Down time

  • The tattooed area will be swollen and possibly tender for the first few days.
  • A clear serum will gather inside the tegaderm bandage and start healing your tattoo.
  • Remove bandage at day 4
  • The scabs will start to form within a day or two, and will begin to fall off after about a week.
  • It is important to keep the tattooed area clean and hydtrated during this time.

Home care

  • Apply a cool compress to the tattooed area to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Keep the tattooed area clean by gently washing it with a mild soap and water.
  • Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel, do not rub.
  • Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment to the tattooed area, such as Aquaphor or Bacitracin.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing over the tattooed area.
  • Do not pick at the scabs, as this can lead to scarring.
  • Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and saunas for at least two weeks.
  • Avoid sun exposure to the tattooed area.

  • Sleep on your back for the first few days to avoid putting pressure on the tattooed area.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing made from a breathable fabric, such as cotton.
  • Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of fluids to promote healing.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, as these can slow down the healing process.
